My love's birthday

I never did blog about the momentous day when my husband turned 27 and caught up to me (yes, I'm about three and a half months older than him). It was a great day, if I do say so myself. I met him for lunch on campus, and he decided to all it a day early. We walked home together on the most beautiful path south of campus which leads to a duck pond (good work BYU). There were 8 little turtles sunning themselves on a rock in the middle of the pond, and like twenty ducklings paddling around faster than I would have thought possible.

I made him one of our favorite pasta dishes for dinner, and he opened his gifts, which included these fantastic smoothie cups with straws (we take walks together every day and have smoothies together every day. Now we can combine them!), a couple books he wanted; one on entertaining, by Martha Stewart (best husband ever), and one called Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, which is described by the publisher as "a metaphorical fugue on minds and machines in the spirit of Lewis Carroll". I also gave him weights (which might have been sort of for me, too), and I painted him a picture, (more on that in another post) which seemed like a great idea, but I ran out of time and had to present it unfinished. Turned out to be a really stupid idea.

He went to Kung Fu and when he came home I had whipped up Namaimo Bars! Canadians rejoice! It was a first for me, and we had no custard powder, so the middle layer's texture and flavor was slightly off, but my oh my, they were even better than I remember! We ate them faster than we should have. For those unaware, Nanaimo Bars (named for a city in British Columbia) are 100% Canadian, and are present at every potluck, Christmas party, baby blessing luncheon, and are even sold at Costco, I think. It's three layers of distinctly delicious dessert. Bottom layer: not-so-sweet combo of ground almonds, walnuts, coconut, butter, egg, and cocoa. Middle layer: a light yellow, vanilla-flavoured, pudding/frosting type stuff. Super sweet. Top layer: chocolate. Soft enough to cut. They are soooo good. There are also mint ones that have a green center in place of the yellow vanilla one.

Anyway, the birthday boy was happy as ever, and I'm glad we're the same age again. I don't like the three moths where I'm older. Although, I do think it qualifies me as being wiser and much more mature.

Happy birthday, baby.
